I am an artist. I am Native American. Some say I do Native American art, but what does that really mean? I look at my art within the context of all art. In the history of art, my work is contemporary, however, the history of contemporary art and Native American art has not yet been written. It may never be written.
Why do I do art? Why not ask why do I breathe; Why am I living? I must produce art. I must live and I must play, therefore I create art.
Sometimes I have an idea of what I will create, but that is as far as I know. I have no definitive plan. It is like walking through a forest and river I have never been to. As I go along, I discover and find things, the adventure is unique and spontaneous. I live in a world of color, of form, of line and space. These elements intertwine with rhythm and movement in a game that I play on canvas or some kind of medium that is chosen for my work. Generally speaking, my work is abstract, but then conceptually, there has to be some type of meaning, whether or not it is discernible that is, I don't expect anyone to understand my painting any more that one can understand life. That is my philosophy.
